Use this quick visual check to spot conditions that may need attention. This is an educational checklist, not a regulatory inspection or compliance certification.
1. Lids
Are dumpster lids present and able to close?
2. Overflow
Is waste contained inside the dumpster rather than piled above or around it?
3. Loose trash
Is loose material picked up around the enclosure and nearby pavement?
4. Leaks
Do you see liquid leaking from a dumpster, compactor, container, or bag?
5. Stains or residue
Is there obvious residue, grease, food waste, or staining that could move with rain?
6. Drain path
Could rainwater carry material from the waste area toward a street, gutter, inlet, or storm drain?
7. Container condition
Are dumpsters and recycling containers visibly damaged, rusted through, or missing key components?
8. Cleaning practices
Is wash water being kept out of streets and storm drains?
9. Recycling contamination
Are recyclable materials kept reasonably dry and free from obvious trash or liquid contamination when required?
10. Document and report
If you find an active spill, discharge, major leak, or unsafe condition, document it and follow the property or local agency’s reporting procedure.
Quick rule: If rain can touch it, move it, and carry it toward a drain, it deserves attention.
