El Niño Ready • Employee Tool

Five actions before the storm.

This is the breakroom-poster version of the campaign: short enough for employees to remember, practical enough for managers to use.

Back to El Niño Ready
1. Close the lids.Outdoor dumpsters and carts should be closed where practical before rain.
2. Pick up loose material.Cardboard, plastic wrap, cups, labels, paper, and loose trash should not be left on pavement.
3. Check for leaks.Report liquids, damaged bags, container holes, residue, or unusual staining.
4. Prevent overflow.Do not stack waste where lids cannot close. Escalate recurring capacity problems.
5. Look toward the drain.Keep the area between the waste enclosure and nearby gutters or drains clear of loose waste.
For managers

Make the behavior easy to repeat.

Assign ownership

Decide who checks the outdoor waste area before rain and before closing shifts.

Use photos

A quick before-rain photo creates a simple record and helps spot recurring problems.

Train new employees

Show them where trash, recycling, and organics go and who to call when containers are full or damaged.

Fix recurring causes

If overflow or loose cardboard happens every week, look at service frequency, container size, staging, and workflow.

Five seconds at the bin matters.

Read the label. Use the right container. Close the lid. Report the problem. That is the behavior we want to make normal.
